From Service to Scholar (2025)
September 26th - 28th, 2025
We are elated to share that the annual “From Service to Scholar” program — a program created to support the Veteran students and grow the Veteran community at Dartmouth college — was hosted again this past weekend. As described in past years and past blogs, the program is designed to orient students to their new surroundings by creating a space for students to build, understand, and share the story of how they went from military service to scholarly pursuits. The thesis of our program is that by understanding and sharing the meaningful moments of growth and adversity within our stories we, first, are able to identify our motivating values, we then connect in a more socially meaningful way, and we begin to build community when we choose to share our stories and the lessons we’ve learned with others. Following a weekend of hiking, reflection, centering, and sharing we host a community dinner where all the faculty, employees, and community members that support our veteran students can gather together, share a meal, and welcome the newest members of the group. This year, as is the case every year, we were blown away by the character of the individuals we worked with and their willingness to share openly and honestly throughout the process. We look forward to continuing our work with the veteran’s throughout this school year and returning next year to meet the newest batch of veteran students.
